GRC&W twin sets (Class 100s) were introduced to the services from 5 May 1958. Running from 7am to 7pm, there was a considerable increase in Monday-Saturday trains, with 27 each way compared with the previous timetable which had 15 Monday-Fridays and 7 on Sats (previously there were no trains after 2pm on Saturdays). During the morning and evening peak periods, and at midday, there was a 20-minute service provided.
In the run up to the introduction the Scottish Region placed a series of adverts in local newspapers to build public interest in the diesels.
By the November 1959 timetable these had dropped to 20 in each direction, one morning commute service being Saturdays excepted. There was still no Sunday service. The winter 1960/1 timetable also had the same number of services but the times were different.
Passenger services on the line ended in April 1962.
