6th June 1983

A BRCW Calder Valley 3-car set led by E51836 awaits departure from York on Monday 6th June 1983 with the 12:25 service to Doncaster. The train travelled via the now closed part of the East Coast Main Line from Chaloners Whin Junction south of York to Barlby Junction at Selby prior to the Selby Diversion being opened later that year. Selby was the only intermediate stop. Brian McDevitt.

Class 111 DMU at Doncaster

1984

Class 111 cars E78709 E78959 (left) are awaiting departure with a local service to York, probably running via Selby. Its car numbers in the 78XXX series show that each has had one of its two Rolls-Royce engines removed, becoming DHS-DHBS. Meanwhile, illustrating the new order, an unidentified Class 141 railbus (right) awaiting departure to Leeds in pre-electrification days - this unit would have still been new at this date, and carries original white and green livery. The first production railbus class, their first few years were beset with mechanical problems, though their reliability improved upon refurbishment in the late 1980s. However, they were all withdrawn by 1997 after a relatively short career with BR, though most were exported for further use... three units have been preserved. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 105 DMU at York

25th July 1986

Vehicles E54458 E51298 are seen entering what was then platform 8 of York station with the 16:42 York - Doncaster via Selby, 25/07/1986. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 105 DMU at York

27th September 1986

A scene at York station on 27 September 1986 - with one of the distinctive-looking Cravens units. The unit was about to work the 16.42 local service to Doncaster - vehicle numbers E51299 and E54429. The station staff stage-left had just blown his whistle, and on this occasion I even primed my 'ghetto blaster' and made a recording of the departure: https://soundcloud.com/sound-vision-10193594/class-105-2-car-dmu-e51299-e54429-leaves-york-on-a-local-service-to-doncaster-27sep1986.
