Class 108 DMU at Morecambe Promenade

1st May 1978

In refurbished white with blue stripe livery, a Class 108 DMU rake with DMCL E50630 nearest the camera, was stood at Morecambe Promenade on Bank Holiday Monday May 1st 1978. Complete with its paraffin tail lamp the DMU had arrived from Leeds with an additional bank holiday service. On the left of this scene is one of the stumps of the steel lattice gantries that once supported the catenary of the electric system that connected Morecambe, Heysham & Lancaster via Torrisholme which was closed in January 1966 along with the station at Lancaster Green Ayre. There were several of these cut-down lattice monuments at Morecambe for many years. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 111 DMU at Morecambe

1st May 1978

Complete with its panelled over headcode box, Metro-Cammell Class 111 Driving Motor Composite Lavatory car M51552 was against the block at Morecambe Promenade, having arrived at the head of a lengthy rake of DMU cars on a Bank Holiday Monday service from Leeds on May 1st 1978. There had been ten of these 3-Car DMU's, fitted with headcode boxes and Rolls-Royce engines, supplied new to the North Eastern Region in 1959/60. The staff on the track on the right had a hose that was filling one of the DMU cars. Visible on the embankment are some of the decapitated steel lattice overhead line gantries for the Lancaster-Morecambe-Heysham electrics that ceased operating in January 1966. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 101 DMU at Settle Junction

13th May 1978

In refurbished white with blue stripe livery, a two-car Class 101 DMU was approaching Settle Junction with a Leeds to Morecambe service on May 13th 1978. The blanked over top marker lamp means the DMBS should be from the small 50198-209 batch, and although the number cannot be fully read it appears to end in a 2, so this is presumably 50202, which was a Neville Hill vehicle at the time. Martyn Hilbert.
