Class 104 DMU at Boldon Colliery

9th April 1970

On Thursday 09/04/1970, a 4-car DMU, with Class 104 driving vehicles (rear is still in green livery) and Class 101 centre trailers, calls at Boldon Colliery, then in Co. Durham, with 1620 Newcastle-Sunderland. South Gosforth had four Class 104 DMCs on this date which would leave in October / December 1970. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 108 DMU at Sunderland

28th August 1975

A proper 4-car Class 108 formation waits to leave Sunderland with 0926 Sunderland-Newcastle (all stations), while the passengers await the 0910 Newcastle-Whitby (departed 0929 from Sunderland - a through service to Whitby during the Summer only, otherwise travelled as far as Middlesbrough only). Note the manual signs suspended from the roof canopy, stating the next destination - written in chalk for the Middlesbrough service on platform 1. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 101 DMU at Pelaw

2nd March 1977

South Gosforth allocated E56370 + E50165 head away from Pelaw on the 2nd March 1977. The destination blind displays Sunderland. Ian Francis.

Class 105 DMU at Heworth

3rd January 1978

On 03/01/1978, a Class 105 forms the 1215 Newcastle-Sunderland seen at the construction site of Heworth station - the train appears to be following what would become the Metro tracks. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 101 DMU at Gateshead East

19th April 1980

A Class 101 DMU at Gateshead East, 19/04/1980. Containing cars E56089 + E51214, it calls with a service to Sunderland. Typical of the period, the train shows a mismatch of Refurbished and Blue + Grey Livery. Unfortunately, the attractive Refurbished Livery was found to get dirty rather quickly, so it was decided to outshop refurbished vehicles in Blue + Grey livery, which had previously been for Inter-City / Cross-Country vehicles only. In this view, 56089 also carries the logo of Tyne & Wear PTE within the blue band, as well as a tail lamp. Gateshead East station, situated between Newcastle and Heworth, closed on 23/11/1981, replaced by the Tyneside Metro. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 101 DMU at Gateshead

10th October 1981

E50209 + E56408 leads another Met-Camm at calling at the soon to close Gateshead station on October 10, 1981. It was replaced by the underground Metro station several hundred yards away. The old station here would have been much better placed for the regeneration of the riverside area if it had been retained. Unfortunately the slide has evidence of the sticking Zenit-E shutter John Carter.

28th August 1982

A 2-car Class 101 unit (consisting of cars 56375/51208) crosses the High Level Bridge at Newcastle on a Sunderland-Newcastle working - 28 August 1982. Lewis Bevan.

19th July 1983

E53212 E54381 arriving at Boldon Colliery (Tyneside) with the 14:55 Newcastle-Sunderland on 19/07/1983. In the background, the horizon is dominated by Monkton Coke Works. Boldon Colliery station was renamed Brockley Whins in 1991, and it became part of the Tyne & Wear Metro system when the Sunderland extension was opened in 2002. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 110 DMU at Newcastle

22nd July 1985

A Class 110 seen at Newcastle on 22/07/1985. Whilst this Yorkshire-based class might have made occasional visits to Newcastle as arrivals from York, this image shows E51814 + E52083 awaiting departure with the 18:35 Newcastle - Sunderland Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 101 DMU at Newcastle

13th April 1987

A Class 101 DMU formed of 53188 + 53216 is seen arriving at Newcastle with a service from Sunderland on 13 April 1987. Dave Warby Collection.
