The 58 mile route is known as the Tyne Valley Line. The route diagram is from the 1973 timetable
Four-car Met-Camm DMU sets allocated to South Gosforth depot were introduced to the service, as well as some Hexham workings, on Monday 4th February 1957. The existing timetable was modified slightly from this date, but with only one extra train introduced which was a Saturdays only afternoon train from Carlisle to Newcastle. Steam still worked the faster limited stop trains, the Met-Camms mainly operated the stopping services. An example was the steam worked 2.00pm Carlisle - Newcastle which now only stopped at Haltwhistle and Hexham, the 1.05pm from Carlisle was DMU operated with additional stops added.[1]
The public timetables also included the Alston Branch until that closed in 1976, and Newcastle - Hexham services. If you have any others that can be added here please get in touch.

An official image (London Midland Region publicity negative DM903) showing a four-car Met-Camm set in Carlisle Citadel station on 7 February 1957. These South Gosforth allocated DMUs had taken over the services from Newcastle a few days earlier on the 4th. Closest is DMCL E50148, the others should be TSL E59047, TBSL E59054 and DMCL E50149, all with 2+2 seating. British Railways.

One question I have is does the existence of 4 marker lamps allow a more accurate dating than the film's window of 1957 to 1961 or does it span the whole period? Screenshot form film by D.M. DTCL NE56075 is at the front of the 5.25pm Newcastle service awaiting departure from Carlisle on 29 August 1966. Michael Mensing.
On 17 June 1967 E56073 lead 1M02 the 0920 Newcastle to Carlisle approaching Naworth Half Barrier level crossing and the site of Naworth station which closed in 1952. Keith Long.
E51435 leads 2M72 the 1625 Newcastle to Carlisle at Milton on 22 July 1967. The third vehicle appears to be a buffet car. Keith Long.
E56084 leading 1N39 the 1825 Carlisle to Newcastle at Naworth on 13th September 1967. Keith Long.
E50830/59343/50883 with 2N73 the 1125 Carlisle to Newcastle departing from Brampton Fell signalbox after picking up a C&W inspector who had come from Hexham to examine a wagon detached in the refuge siding with a hot box, 1st March 1968. Keith Long.
A two-car Met-Camm set heads out of Haltwhistle station with the 12.30pm Newcastle - Carlisle service on June 27, 1968. Both vehicles have revised lining, the DMBS has window bars on the passenger doors, the DTC does not, suggesting the two vehicles have not always been paired together. Michael Mensing.
On June 28, 1968 a four-car Met-Camm set is seen about to pass the closed Wetheral station with the 10.35am Newcastle - Carlisle line. The second vehicle is a buffet car, there is a BG attached to the rear. The closest power car appears to be E51437. Michael Mensing.
GRC&W DMBS E51114 working as part of a four-car set. Seen in Carlisle station on 11 August 1968 no doubt on a service from and back to Newcastle, the South Gosforth allocated vehicle is with three vehicles still in green, a BRC&W and two Met-Camms. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Two Class 101 sets are seen in Haltwhistle station in June 1970. Steve Davies Collection.
A Class 101 twin set in Haltwhistle station. Newcastle is on the destination blind, likely on a service from Carlisle. Orange Tynerail names are on the cab so this was likely taken in 1971. Stuart Mackay Collection.
On a dull wet 16 February 1971 two Met-Camm DMUs are seen in Haltwhistle station. The set on the left is working the Alston Branch, the set on the right with the the orange Tynerail names has Newcastle on the destination blind, but is in the Carlisle platform so the blind at this end may not have been changed. Stuart Mackay Collection.
South-Gosforth allocated Class 101 DTC E56220 carries Tynerail stickers with the name "Coffy Johnny" when seen in Carlisle station with a Newcastle service on Tuesday 1 June 1971. Alongside English Electric Type 4 Class 50 no. 445 is on 1P38 (a Euston stopping service). Ed Fulton.
