A visit (my only one, so far) to Ilkley on 5 May 1979. I travelled on the 10.27 from Leeds, formed of Metro-Cam Class 101 2-car unit 56385/50202, and this unit is seen departing from Ilkley on its next working back to Leeds, past Ilkley signal box. Ilkley Junction box, which dated from 1913, was closed as from 11 July 1994 in the run-up to the electrification of the line. According to Wikipedia "Ilkley is notable in that it was the last British Rail station to be lit by gas. The gas lights were extinguished for the last time on 8 May 1988." Lewis Bevan.
In refurbished livery a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of DTCL E56199 & DMBS E50605, was arriving at Ilkley with a service from Leeds on August 9th 1980. The route from Leeds to Ilkley is now known as the 'Wharfedale Line' and was electrified in 1995. The two tracks on the far left background of this scene were once through lines that ran beyond Ilkley on the route to Skipton via Addingham and Bolton Abbey that was closed in 1965. Martyn Hilbert.
Complete with its oil tail lamp still in position, a refurbished liveried Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars E50605 & E56199 was stood at Ilkley with a service for Leeds on August 9th 1980. The station still retained its 1950's BR North Eastern Region enamel signage in Tangerine and was also gas-lit. Complete with his shopping in a bag, the driver is walking towards the cab. On the extreme right of this view, where the hole-in-the-wall is located, were once the through platforms in the days when Ilkley was on the route to Skipton via Addingham and Bolton Abbey, the western end of which now forms the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. The line beyond Ilkley closed in 1965. Martyn Hilbert.
A Class 108 two-car DMU stood in platform 1 at Ilkley with a service to Leeds on August 9th 1980. The Wharfdale Line from Leeds to Ilkley was electrified in 1995. The Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) was recorded as E56193, yet that vehicle was in Blue and Grey livery from April 1980, so either the vehicle or date is wrong... Martyn Hilbert.

A two-car Class 101 formed DMBS E53166 and DTSL 54051 takes up a tiny part of the vast Ilkley station when seen on New Years Day 1987. The empty trackbeds on the right once carried trains to Bolton Abbey and Skipton. Jonathan Hazan.
