Kingsknowe was a station three miles from Edinburgh Princes Street station on the line to Glasgow Central via Shotts. Few of those services stopped at Kingsknowe and the intermediate stations of Merchiston and Slateford, they were instead serviced by a local service, to which DMUs had been introduced by the June 1959 timetable.
Kingsknowe station closed on 6 July 1964, ending the service. Merchiston and Slateford remained open, most Edinburgh - Glasgow trains now called at those in addition to some services that now terminated at Midcalder.
It would reopen on 1 February 1971, at which time Edinburgh Waverley was the eastern terminus. It was now mainly service by the Edinburgh - Glasgow via Shotts trains, but in the early years of the re-introduction there was a Mon-Fri morning Kingsknowe - Edinburgh service and a Mon - Fri late afternoon return working.
